Sony HDR-UX1 and HDR-SR1 Handycam camcorders are Sony's first consumer camcorders to record in full 1080i HD resolution and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. The HDR-UX1 model records directly to three-inch DVD discs for easy playback and sharing, and the HDR-SR1 camcorder records to a built-in 30GB hard drive which facilitates mass video storage as well as in-camcorder and PC editing.
Both video cameras feature HDMI outputs for connection to an HD television with no data conversion and subsequent degradation of picture quality. Both support the new AVCHD camcorder recording format based on the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 codec for video compression and Dolby digital audio. Both models allow for quick data transfer from the camcorder to a compatible PC for playback and editing. The hard disk drive unit also features Sony's One Touch Disc Burn button for easy DVD creation using a PC.
The new HDR-UX1 and HDR-SR1 Handycam camcorders also include four-megapixel digital still capture, a Dual Record function that allows you to shoot video and simultaneously capture 2.3 megapixel stills, and a Smooth Slow Record function to shoot video in slow motion. Both models are also equipped with an advanced Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar lens, an extra-large, 3.5-inch SwivelScreen LCD screens display video with high-contrast and optimal color due to Sony's Clear Photo Plus LCD technology. Video is easy to view on screen from any angle and in virtually any environment. The screens double as touch-sensitive control panels, giving easy access to many of the camcorders' settings.
The HDR-UX1 camcorder will be available in September for about $1,400, and the HDR-SR1 will hit stores in October for about $1,500. Options will include a full line of accessories, including lights, lenses, microphones, InfoLithium batteries, chargers and cables. Both models will be available online at Sonystyle.com, at Sony Style retail stores.
The claim to fame for this 230g pistol grip shooter is that it's the smallest full HD camcorder that comes with GPS. Yes, you can shoot your 2.3-megapixel video onto 16GB of internal memory for around six hours and then watch it all back on the 2.7" LCD complete with map and pinpoint graphics showing exactly where it is you saw that you saw you mate accidentally fall into that vomit spattered shopping trolley.
In true Sony style, the TG7VE takes light through a Carl Zeiss lens onto a 1/5" Exmor CMOS sensor and puts the lot together with a Bionz processor. It shoots stills at 4-megapixels, gives you up to 10x optical zoom and features all sorts of face-tracking and smile shot functionality which will even work in video capture mode.
No word on the price just yet but it'll be out in May along with a 32GB additional memory card plus a wide-angle cap too. Sounds like a good 'un so long as they can keep the price and battery consumption low.

The HDR-CX11E is also the first camcorder to feature Smile Shutter technology which, according to Sony,’automatically captures crisp 7.6 megapixel photos when someone smiles. There’s no need to press the shutter button or interrupt the action: it’s great for spontaneously capturing relaxed, happy moments while you’re recording.’ Interestingly Smile Shutter can also be utilised in ‘Dual Capture’ mode whereby ‘stills are captured whenever someone smiles during movie recording. Recording directly to Memory Stick PRO Duo media, according to Sony’s press release the HDR-CX11E comes with a 4GB card supplied to get you started though, being that a 16GB memory card offers a stated 5 hours 55 minutes of full HD video storage the supplied card only offers around 1.5 hours of capacity (the aforementioned 16GB card is an option at the point of purchase, however).
